Community Recycling Centres – Now Accepting More Items

Update May 28th 2020

From Monday 1 June, residents will be able to take more types of waste to Surrey’s community recycling centres.

Ten of Surrey’s CRCs were reopened on 11 May, but only for black bag waste and garden waste. From 1 June more materials, including wood, scrap metal, small electronics and white goods, will be accepted once again.

The full list of what can be taken will be available from 1 June on the Surrey County Council website or by calling 03456 009 009.

Unfortunately, the sites won’t be able to accept chargeable waste (soil, rubble, plasterboard or tyres), as staff are unable to safely process payments, or textiles, as reprocessors are not currently able to take it.

Surrey County Council said: “Whilst we offer this essential service to residents, it is important we maintain social distancing measures for the safety and wellbeing of staff and visitors to the sites. There will be clearly marked walkways and only one person will be able to be on the gantries to access the containers at any time.

As a result of the social distancing measures, the number of people allowed on the site at any one time will be limited. It’s expected that only a quarter of cars will be able to pass through the sites, compared to the typical peak time visitor levels at this time of year. Therefore, queues are expected and people should only visit the CRC if it’s essential. If you do travel to the CRCs, please follow instructions from traffic marshals.”

Over the past few weeks, the CRCs have operated with extended opening hours in order to manage demand from residents.

Over the coming weeks, the sites will transition back to standard opening hours. This means that from 1 June, all sites that are currently operating, except Farnham and Camberley, will be open from 8am to 5pm. Farnham and Camberley will be open from 8am to 4pm.

Then, from Monday 8 June, all ten sites that are currently operating will be open from 8am to 4pm.

The five smaller sites that are currently closed will remain closed for the time-being as it is not possible to safely open them with social distancing measures in place.

This position will be reviewed and these sites will be re-opened when it is possible to do so. The five sites are Bagshot, Caterham, Cranleigh, Dorking and Warlingham.

Residents using a van, pick-up or trailer will be able to visit the sites again from Monday 1 June, but will still need a van permit, as usual.

Due to social distancing measures, staff will not be able to assist in unloading your vehicle, this includes white goods. So please only bring to site what you can carry yourself.

Unfortunately, the Revive re-use shops remain closed at this time and the sites do not have capacity to store items for re-use, so please hold onto these at home for the time-being.

May 5th 2020

There will be a phased reopening of most of Surrey’s community recycling centres (CRC) from Monday 11 May.

However, there are limits to the numbers of people on each site, changes to what materials are accepted and revised opening hours. Residents should only use the CRCs if they absolutely need to, and must check for the latest information before they travel at surreycc.gov.uk/recycling or by calling 03456 009 009 as these arrangements are subject to change.

  • To maintain social distancing, a reduced number of visitors will be able to visit a CRC at any time – residents should come alone as only one person will be permitted to leave each car.
  • During the first reopening phase, residents can only bring black bag waste and garden waste. These are the most common materials people drop off at this time of year, and what residents are more likely to be storing for disposal. No other waste can be accepted at this time, and the reuse shops are staying closed.
  • Limiting the CRCs to two materials means visitors will be able to park in alternate parking bays with dedicated access to containers. This means that social distancing will be possible at all times, which is essential to operate the sites safely and protect residents and staff. It will also help residents to quickly dispose of their waste.
  • Opening hours have been extended to help as many people as possible to pass through each day. Queues are still expected outside the sites so please be patient.
  • Residents can only bring their waste in cars – no vans, pick ups or trailers will be allowed into the CRCs. Please don’t arrive on foot.
  • Staff cannot help with unpacking cars. If one person isn’t able to carry the waste it should be left at home.

Leatherhead and Guildford CRCs share a site with waste transfer stations – where residential collection trucks drop off their waste. There may be delays accessing the site so crews can deposit the larger amounts of waste they’re currently collecting. Please follow instructions from traffic marshals to keep access roads clear.

Smaller CRCs

Due to the fewer numbers of people who can safely be on site and the impact of potential queuing on surrounding roads, our smaller sites in Bagshot, Caterham, Cranleigh, Dorking and Warlingham are staying closed. This is because we cannot operate these sites safely and ensure social distancing between visitors and staff.

Returning to a full service

Residents are asked to hold onto other materials they need to take to CRCs, such as card, wood, metal, electricals and construction waste. The intention is to move to a second reopening phase after a few weeks when the full range of materials can be accepted, but only when it is safe to do. We will continue to only allow reduced numbers on sites to maintain social distancing.

Mike Goodman, Cabinet Member for Environment and Waste, said: “I would like to thank all the waste staff in Surrey for working so hard to maintain residential collections. The dedication of these key workers to keeping this service running across the county during the lockdown has been exceptional.

“I’m also grateful for the patience of our residents during the closure of the CRCs, and for holding on to their waste to prevent the collections from being overwhelmed.

“Balancing the competing need to maintain social distancing alongside reopening our highly valued recycling centres is vital. I believe these arrangements will help visitors and staff stay far enough apart, while helping residents to clear their excess black bag and garden waste as quickly as possible.

“But I would still encourage residents to only visit the CRCs if they really need to, and make the most of residential waste, recycling and garden waste collection services. We will keep these measures under review, but expect them to remain in place for a few weeks while residents clear their backlog of waste.”

CRCs phase one opening times

Chertsey, Earlswood, Epsom, Guildford, Leatherhead, Shepperton, Witley and Woking CRCs: opening hours: 9am-6pm, seven days a week.

Camberley and Farnham CRCs: opening hours: 9am-4pm, seven days a week.

Bagshot, Caterham, Cranleigh, Dorking and Warlingham CRCs: remain closed
